Divorce Solicitors – Clear, Calm Legal Support When It Matters Most

Divorce solicitors at SML Law understand that going through a divorce or separation is rarely simple. Emotions can run high. Practicalities can feel overwhelming. And while no legal process can make that all disappear, the right advice at the right time can make a huge difference.

That’s where we come in.

Our experienced Family Team focuses on reducing conflict wherever possible — guiding you through the legal side of things in a calm, constructive way. We try to help you agree as much as possible with the other person, because that’s often what reduces both emotional stress and legal costs.

No Two Families Are the Same

Every couple’s situation is different. So the advice we give is never off the shelf.

Sometimes, unfortunately, court is the only option — especially when there are urgent concerns or if communication has broken down completely. But more often than not, we can work with you to find a fair, workable plan without going down that route.

Our job is to help you see the bigger picture and make informed decisions. That means friendly, realistic and objective advice at every step — and a steady hand during what might be one of the most difficult times in your life.

Consultation

If you’d like to speak with someone about your family situation, please call 01285 650000 and ask for a member of the Family Team. Or reach out to Tracey or Sarah directly.

You can also read Sarah Pugh’s article on Resolution to find out more about our non-confrontational approach to family law.

How Our Divorce Solicitors Can Help You

Our divorce solicitors provide expert legal advice tailored to your individual circumstances. Whether you are going through an amicable separation or a more complex dispute, we are here to help you navigate the legal process with confidence. We handle all aspects of divorce law, including financial settlements, division of assets, and arrangements for children.

Financial Settlements and Asset Division

One of the most important aspects of any divorce is reaching a fair financial settlement. Our experienced family law team will help you understand your rights and options, whether that involves negotiating directly with your spouse, reaching a consent order, or making a formal application to the court. We will work to protect your financial future and ensure any agreement is legally binding.

Arrangements for Children

When children are involved, their welfare is always the primary concern. We can help you reach child arrangements through negotiation, mediation, or where necessary, through the courts. Our team works closely with our colleagues who specialise in children law to ensure the best possible outcomes for your family.

Alternative Approaches to Divorce

Court proceedings are not always the right answer. We support a range of dispute resolution approaches, including mediation and collaborative law, which can be less stressful and more cost-effective. You can also explore our Resolution Together service, which focuses on reaching agreement without going to court.

The GOV.UK divorce guidance provides useful information about the legal process for ending a marriage in England and Wales. Our team can help you understand what this means for your situation and guide you through every step.

Why Choose SML Law for Divorce Legal Advice?

SML Law is a well-established law firm based in Cirencester, serving clients across The Cotswolds and beyond. Our Family Team has years of experience helping individuals and families through some of life's most challenging moments. We are members of Resolution, a community of family justice professionals committed to a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law. We also offer advice on related areas such as financial claims, cohabitation legal advice, and pre and post nuptial agreements.

How long does a divorce take in the UK?

Under the current no-fault divorce process, the timeframe varies depending on your circumstances. Most divorces take between 6 and 12 months when financial and child arrangements are included. Every case is different so please discuss your individual circumstances with a qualified solicitor.

Do both parties need a solicitor for divorce?

Both parties are not required to have their own solicitor, but it is recommended. Having separate legal advice makes sure each person's interests are properly represented, particularly when dividing assets or agreeing child arrangements.

What happens to the family home in a divorce?

The family home is usually the largest asset in a divorce settlement. Options include one party buying out the other, selling the property and splitting the proceeds, or a deferred sale if children are involved. A solicitor will advise on the most suitable arrangement for your specific situation.

What is a no-fault divorce?

No-fault divorce was introduced in April 2022. It allows couples to divorce without one party having to blame the other. Either one or both parties can apply, and the process is generally less contentious than the previous system.

What is Resolution Together?

Traditionally, separation involved each person instructing their own solicitor, which could make matters more adversarial and drive up costs. Resolution Together offers a different approach.
